Rushikulya: A Crucial Nesting Ground
Rushikulya, a coastal estuary in Odisha, is one of the world’s most important nesting sites for Olive Ridley turtles. Each year, thousands of females gather here to lay their eggs during a synchronized event called “arribada.” The region’s significance has grown over the years, and in 2025, it achieved a historic milestone—over 11 lakh (1.1 million) nestlings were recorded, a huge leap for turtle conservation.
This achievement is a result of decades of dedicated work by conservationists, local communities, and government agencies.
Conservation Heroes: The People Behind the Success
Mr. Rabindranath Sahu, Secretary of the Rushikulya Sea Protection Committee, has been a key player in educating local communities about the importance of turtle conservation. He recalls a time when villagers unknowingly ate turtle eggs, unaware of the turtles’ endangered status. Thanks to his efforts, the community now actively participates in protecting the turtles.
Dr. Bivash Pandav, a marine turtle researcher, helped document Rushikulya’s mass nesting events starting in 1994, leading to the official protection of the site. He stresses the global importance of Odisha’s nesting beaches, which are among the few places where Olive Ridleys gather in such large numbers.
Dr. Basudev Tripathy and Dr. Kartik Shanker have also contributed to understanding the turtles’ behavior and migration patterns. Their research highlights the ongoing threats these turtles face, including fishing-related mortality and climate change.
