  • The little heaven that the owner has created for hungry stray animals

There are coffee shops and there are coffee shops and while one might have the perfect concoction for an Expresso, another might have the best cream tower on its Latte but Coffee King scores over all.

The little restaurant on the corner of a side road near Chincholi, Mumbai is not only a treat to coffee lovers but stray animals too.

At the entrance on the left , there is a huge photo of a dog and just below, a little shelter which is packed with food for animals. There are biscuits, rice, nibbles, water.

And that is what, for me, separates one human being from the other – the gesture to go beyond one own needs and fantasies, to think of others, especially the voiceless. I was passing by the other day and stopped when I saw this heaven like place. The owner was not there but the staff who were serving told me that photo is of the pet owner’s dog who is no more and the owner wants to keep his pet’s memory alive by feeding as many hungry stray animals as possible.

The staff and rightly so, did not want to part with the owner’s number for me to dig more information but I guess there is nothing to be discovered. For the time I was there I saw a stream of cats and dogs and birds making their way to the food corner – guess the owner’s pet, whichever part of heaven he is will be one happy doggy – to know that at least some strays will not sleep hungry at night.

(As probably told to Rhea)
